Congratulations go to HSDC Alton Psychology Lecturer Bianca Junge, who ran the London Marathon recently to raise funds for Alton-based charity Kidney Care UK.

Bianca explains more, “This year I was lucky to be given a club place by my running club, so I didn’t have to fundraise to secure a spot. However, a fellow runner and I decided to raise some funds for the Alton-based charity Kidney Care UK.

“Unfortunately, in August the organisers announced that the London Marathon would be an elite only race. All others were given the option to complete it as a virtual race in their hometown. As I had trained all year, I decided to map a marathon route around Alton and to complete the distance.

“I was lucky that I had a fantastic support crew. Some of my fellow Alton Runners decided to join me at various sections along the route to cheer me on. Vanessa Edworthy, my friend and HSDC Wellbeing Manager, joined me for the second half of the marathon. It made such a big difference to have her by my side; she is such a great motivator. I’m so lucky that she was running with me.

“The weather on the day was horrendous. I had to manoeuvre through deep puddles, and the rain wouldn’t stop. Despite the wet feet, knee-deep puddles and the exhaustion, I would do it all over again. It was such a memorable day, and I can’t thank my support crew enough.

“Luckily, I have a definite place in the 2021 London Marathon, so hopefully next year, I’ll be running around London.”
