Eastleigh College and Southampton City College announce proposed merger to form a further education powerhouse for South Hampshire
Eastleigh College and Southampton City College have announced plans to merge in a move that will create the largest college of technical and professional education in South Hampshire for 28,000 students annually
The proposed merger follows the Department for Education’s plans for restructuring the post-16 education and training sector through its national Area-Based process.
Following a detailed review, the colleges look to merge in March 2019 and bring significant benefits to South Hampshire through sharing costs and combining the very best facilities and teaching environments.
Geraint Davies, Chair of Southampton City College said: “We see the DfE Area-Based process as an exceptional opportunity to extend and further develop the combined offering of these two great colleges. By combining our individual significant strengths and expertise we can deliver the diverse skills required across South Hampshire”.
The merged colleges will provide greater access to further education, higher education and apprenticeships, combining inclusion and excellence to meet the community’s needs. It will also enable the new college to take advantage of a strong financial position, making best use of public funds and enabling increased investment in learning and training.
Jon Sendell, Chair of Eastleigh College said: “It is clear that both colleges strive to provide everyone in their communities with the best possible opportunity to succeed and share a desire to excel in meeting the region’s educational and economic needs. This merger gives us the chance to increase capability and capacity and really make a difference to the education offering in the area.
The proposed college will be made up of the four existing campuses in Eastleigh, Winchester, Southampton and the Marine Skills Centre.
