Fareham Borough Council held a special Council meeting yesterday evening to formally acknowledge the 50th anniversary of Fareham having Borough Status.
The inaugural annual meeting of Fareham Borough Council was held at 11am on Tuesday 9th April 1974, so 2024 represents our ‘Golden Anniversary’ as a Borough.
At that meeting, the Charter of Incorporation of the Borough was presented to the Mayor by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, at that time The Right Hon The Earl of Malmesbury. The Captain of HMS Collingwood also presented the Mayor with the Civic Mace, which is used to this day for ceremonial purposes.
As part of our 2024 celebrations, special 50th anniversary flags have been raised in West Street, Fareham. This is to complement activities already organised for this year, including new Live Love Local lamppost banners to help support Fareham’s district centres and golden-themed community events throughout the year.
There are also opportunities for Fareham residents to get involved. To find out more about Fareham at 50, please go to www.fareham.gov.uk/farehamat50.
