Civil engineering experts will give young people an insight into careers in the construction industry at i-Construct, an exciting immersive skills workshop event supported by the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
The unique i-Construct event will be held at Fareham College’s Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) on 12 and 13 October. Industry bodies, employers, associations, schools, colleges and the Solent LEP’s careers hub team will be on hand to offer information and advice to inspire young people about careers in construction. Students will be introduced to more than 200 job roles, as well as a range of educational pathways, including further and higher education, apprenticeships and T levels.
Through hands-on learning experiences, the event will help students develop their employability skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, organisation and presentation skills.
Year 7 to Year 11 pupils from schools across the Solent will participate in construction sector challenges, working in teams to interview construction experts and resolving a hypothetical incident.
Students’ presentations will be judged to win an award from 14 different categories – the Solent LEP is sponsoring the Best Sustainable Consideration category.
Participants will also be able to try out technical equipment, including transport simulators, drones and virtual reality (VR) applications.
Solent LEP supports the connection between industry and education to close skill gaps and pave the way for a better economic future for the region.
Brooke Hoskins, LEP Director and Skills Lead, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this informative workshop event at Fareham College which will shine a spotlight on the careers in civil engineering which are available to young people in the Solent region.
“Following the success of the inaugural event last year, I-Construct will once again deliver an engaging and inspirational glimpse into the construction industry, aiming to address a future skills gap. We hope it sparks an interest and encourages more school pupils to find out more about the construction career options that are open to them.”
Around 25 companies and organisations, including Hampshire Construction Training Association (HCTA) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), will be supporting the event, with many sponsoring awards.
