Around 80 Health & Social Care students were able to explore a variety of healthcare careers at a Medical Mavericks event on Wednesday 18th March. The event was sponsored by the Southern Universities Network (SUN) and HSDC.
Medical Mavericks hold interactive workshops to inspire students to make more informed decisions about their career and lifestyle choices as well as opening their eyes to different healthcare careers.
Toby Sadri, from Medical Mavericks, said: “We’ve been talking to the students about opportunities in the healthcare sector – there are over 350 different careers.
“The careers available are predominantly science-based, but there are jobs with an art and design specialism, or there’s a business side to some careers. Even with the top jobs there are ways to get into them without the top grades. If you wanted to be a surgeon but you don’t think you’re going to get the grades, you can become an operating department practitioner or an assistant in surgery.
“We have loads of equipment here with us today for the students to try out. We have Andy the Arm which you can take blood from, an ultrasound machine, which you can use to find out if you’re still growing and keyhole surgery simulators. We look at the careers behind each piece of equipment we bring too; we share this information and career route with the students.”
Helen Hart, Course Manager for Level 3 Health & Social Care, brings her students to the workshop every year: “It’s always a really fun morning when Medical Mavericks come to HSDC. Students get to experience practical and hands-on activities that will help them understand more about the careers that are available.”
Friends and Level 3 students Malak Mharzi-Hobbs, Freya Gover and Shannon-Marie Harrell enjoyed trying out the various pieces of equipment. Malak said: “I like the practical feel of today. It helps me choose what I want to do in the future by everything that is offered.” Shannon echoed Malak’s sentiment: “Today helped me get experience with the equipment I might use later on in my career.”
