As businesses adjust following the dramatic effects of lockdown and begin to navigate a way forward in a post-COVID world, an action group is emphasising the importance of working together to navigate the future challenges.
HR expert Helen Johnson, chairman of the Business South action group Workforce South believes the full effects of the pandemic could take months, if not years, to emerge.
Throughout the pandemic, Helen and the Workforce South community have been able to share experiences and best practice.
Helen, who is also HR Business Partner Southern Co-op – the regional, independent co-operative, said: “There have already been so many changes as a result of the pandemic which have been distressing for so many people and their lives.
“Unfortunately the consensus is that we will be living with COVID and the ripples it has caused for years to come.
“As an economy, we have to think about how we carry on and how we can start moving forward. But in the knowledge that it won’t ever be the same.
“It has been reassuring to have that network of expertise during such an unsettled period for everyone.”
Two areas which the Workforce South action group has already observed as needing further support, are the over 50s and new job seekers.
Helen said: “One of the interesting developments has been the growing number of over 50s who have used the lockdown as a time to take stock and re-evaluate their lives. They are using this moment in time to make a big life change, turn their back on the daily commute and 9-5 working and to do something completely different with their lives.
“The last six months have also been really difficult for young people and as an organisation, Workforce South will be strongly promoting apprenticeships and work placements.
“With so much change ahead of us, we need to focus on our young people, those who are transitioning and those who are returning to work with some trepidation.”
Workforce South is looking to support HR professionals by creating a toolbox podcast with short case studies and access to expertise across a range of sectors.
