Our latest Housing Group meeting focused on three key themes: improving housing quality and urban planning, sharing innovative heating solutions developed in the Central South, and providing an update on the delivery of key worker housing, previously raised at our APPG.
Richard Summers, from Boyle & Summers, provided an overview of housing quality and urban design, highlighting the importance of moving beyond a numbers‑driven approach to housing delivery, and instead adopting a more strategic, design‑led model. He emphasised the value of creating well‑connected, mixed‑use communities that support long‑term sustainability and quality of life, helping to make the Central South an increasingly attractive place to live and work.
Quality innovation from Michelle Ansell and Tim Brock at NexGen Heating presented a new and sustainable form of heating technology. Their system uses infrared panels integrated into walls and ceilings, offering a more efficient and flexible alternative to traditional heating methods. Early case studies suggest the potential for around a 30% reduction in energy costs compared to gas systems, alongside improved comfort and energy performance.
The meeting also included an important update from Sharon Collins on the group’s ongoing work around key worker housing. The scale of the challenge remains significant, with recent findings indicating that over 18,000 NHS staff in the region are considering leaving due to housing affordability pressures. The group continues to work collaboratively with partners across the public and private sectors to identify sites, unlock opportunities and advocate for greater recognition of key worker housing as critical priority.
We look forward to welcoming you to our next Housing Group meeting on 17 June, 10:00–11:00 (venue TBC).
