People and businesses are being encouraged to spruce up the Winchester district by taking part in this year’s Great British Spring Clean.
Winchester City Council is getting behind this year’s Keep Britain Tidy campaign to clear up litter by providing community clean ups with high-vis jackets, litter picker equipment, and black sacks, as well as offering to collect the rubbish bags when they are full.
Anyone can get involved in the national initiative between March 20 to April 13. In addition to organised community litter picks, people can also pledge to do a clean up when walking the dog; or parents can get kids involved when on the school run.
Last year more than 500,000 people across the country got involved, including 50 volunteers in Bishop’s Waltham who joined forces to pick up 70 sacks of rubbish.
Leader of Winchester City Council, Cllr Lucille Thompson, said:
“The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic way to make a real difference to your local environment. We will help people to get involved by providing litter picking equipment and bags – and we will pick up the sacks of rubbish too. For just an hour or two of time individually, we can collectively spruce up our beautiful district. It’s a great way for communities to come together and kids love getting involved too.”
The council has partnered with its ground maintenance contractor idverde to support the Great British Spring Clean Up. Groups can email: corinne.harris@idverde.co.uk to ask for litter pickers, hi-vis jackets and black bags (up to a maximum of 200 bags) and the location of where the bags of rubbish will need to be collected.
