HSDC is exceptionally proud of its partnership with Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a leading charity that delivers free screenings to people aged 14-35 to help prevent sudden cardiac deaths, with a recent screening event reaffirming this.
This partnership has been ongoing for over five years, and is instrumental in helping CRY carry out their electrocardiograms and echocardiograms, one of the most effective ways to detect problems including arrhythmias, previous heart attacks and narrow arteries. If necessary, these screenings can lead to Cardiology referrals or letters to GPs for routine monitoring.
Recently, the William Archibald Building on HSDC’s Havant Campus hosted a screening event, where these important procedures were carried out. In total, this event provided 100 young people with a free ECG, checking their heartbeat for any anomalies whilst raising awareness of heart conditions.
All of CRY’s screenings are funded by money raised by families who have sadly lost young family members to sudden cardiac death, with several of the fundraisers being bereaved parents of former HSDC students. Using HSDC’s campuses for these ECG screenings therefore carries enormous emotional value for all involved, and ensures that the College continues to give back to the community.
Of those screened at Havant, most were from the local area, whilst others travelled from as far as Bristol, Bournemouth, Reading and London. This showcases just how important these screenings are for everyone involved.
Speaking about the event, a representative from CRY said:
“A big thank you to HSDC for all your support and for helping to raise awareness for CRY! Our team loves to use the William Archibald Building, it works brilliantly as a venue for us, and the recent screening was a resounding success!”
CRY is just one of many organisations that HSDC works with to ensure that the College continues to provide essential support for the local community both in and outside of regular term times.
HSDC’s Community Engagement team said:
“We are proud to be hosts to the CRY Screening events at HSDC Havant. Our community is at the heart of what we do, and the screenings run by the fantastic team at CRY are an essential service. We encourage young people to book their free screenings at these events, they really are important!”
