On 20th November, the Maritime and Transport Careers Programme (MTCP) hosted its annual Careers Day at ABP’s Ocean Cruise Terminal, bringing together schools from across Hampshire and the Solent areas and leading employers to showcase the diverse opportunities within the maritime and transport sectors. As Engagement Lead, I was proud to see the event deliver on its core purpose: to inspire young people and connect them with real-world career pathways.
The MTCP is a collaborative initiative by Business South’s Maritime and Transport Action Group and the Hampshire Careers Hub, designed to address skills gaps and raise awareness of careers in two of the region’s most critical sectors: maritime and transport. Working in partnership with schools, employers, and industry bodies, the programme provides people of all ages with meaningful encounters, practical experiences, and insights into the breadth of roles available—from engineering and logistics to hospitality and environmental management. The Careers Day is a flagship event within this programme, offering a unique platform for engagement and inspiration.
The Careers Day provided nearly 400 young people with a rare opportunity to explore careers they may never have considered. Teachers described the event as “the best careers event we’ve attended”, praising its interactive nature and the chance for young people to engage directly with industry professionals. From hands-on experiences in a DP World Container, climbing in a 40ft truck, the RHA’s truck simulator and tanker tours from Whittaker Tankers to conversations with experts, from businesses including Meachers Global Logistics, DP World, Ferryspeed, ABP, Solent Stevedores, Red Funnel, Carnival, Cunard, P&O Cruises, the day was designed to make careers tangible and exciting.
Employers are central to the success of these events. Their commitment to showcasing real-world roles and sharing personal career journeys helps young people understand the breadth of opportunities available, each bringing their expertise and enthusiasm to the day.
One employer summed up the importance of these interactions:
“Events like this are vital for the future of our industry. They allow us to engage with young people directly, answer their questions, and show them that there is a place for them in maritime and transport. It’s about opening doors and building confidence.”
Careers events like MTCP’s are more than just a careers fair—they are a bridge between education and employment. They help young people make informed choices, challenge misconceptions, and spark aspirations. For employers, they provide an opportunity to invest in the future workforce and ensure the sustainability of sectors that are critical to the economy.
Feedback from schools and employers highlights the importance of continuing to offer hands-on activities and networking opportunities. As Engagement Lead, I am committed to building on this year’s success and ensuring that future events continue to inspire and inform the next generation.
