Introduction

In 2023, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) Local South team worked in collaboration with Business South data area profile for the Central South.

This area profile was developed for the bespoke ‘Central South’ geography, was defined with the aim to report on a range of progress indicators for the bespoke geography, published by ONS and other government departments.

Partnership Working

Proud to be working with ONS and OS

Business South are hugely proud to be working with the teams at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Ordnance Survey (OS). Both are located in the Central South region and they have helped develop the story of the region.

ONS have developed a data set for the region and this was launched by Deputy Director for Subnational Statistics and Analysis at the ONS, Emma Hickman, and Yasmin Parekh from ONS Local (pictured) at our Annual Conference in 2023.

Ordnance Survey created a map for the Central South that features in Prosper Magazine and they also generated a digital version featuring investment sites for our stand at MIPIM, the world’s leading property and investment event held in Cannes.

Graduate Retention

Kier Construction Retention Project

The Kier Construction Retention Task Group looking at graduate retention in the Central South UK was launched by Michelle McKechnie, Senior Business Development Manager and Rachel Darke, Kier’s Corporate Social Responsibility Co-ordinator as part of the recent Workforce South briefing.

They will be working with experts from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) based in Titchfield and the University of Southampton. ONS compiled data for the Central South showed the Central South has a higher rate of graduate migration into the area but there is an overall loss of graduates.

Population

Central South - Home of 2.7m people

As revealed in the Central South area profile data compiled by the Office of National Statistics – the region is home to 2.7m (from the 2021 Census). Of this population the Central South has a slightly older population than the average across England and Wales.

However, the Central South has a higher proportion of economically active people compared to the average in England and Wales.

Central South accounts for 3.9% of England and Wales output

The Central South accounted for an estimated 3.9% of England and Wales output in 2020, which is a drop from 4.2% in 2010.

In 2021, Public Administration and Defense was the top contributing industry by % of UK GVA by industry.
