Few people have influenced modern cruising in Britain quite like David Dingle CBEFrom joining the business as a management trainee in 1978 to leading Carnival UK as CEO, his nearly 48-year career helped shape P&O Cruises, Cunard and the cruise industry we know today.
As David retires from his executive role, we have an opportunity to reflect on the impact he has had on our brands, our colleagues and the wider maritime sector.
David joined the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company in August 1978 and built experience across finance, marketing, operations and commercial leadership before becoming Managing Director of P&O Cruises and later CEO of Carnival UK.
His career mirrors the growth of modern cruising in Britain. During his leadership, Carnival UK navigated significant change and growth, including major fleet investment, evolving guest expectations and the continued development of both P&O Cruises and Cunard.
He helped strengthen two iconic brands while supporting the growth of cruising as a mainstream holiday choice enjoyed by millions of people across the UK.
But those achievements tell only part of the story.
Colleagues often describe David as a thoughtful and steady leader. Someone who brought clarity during periods of change, listened carefully and never lost sight of the people behind the business. Whether discussing ship design, guest experience, operational excellence or strategy, he combined attention to detail with a clear vision for the future.
His influence also extended beyond Carnival UK. Through leadership positions with organisations including Maritime UK, CLIA, the UK Chamber of Shipping and the European Cruise Council, he helped champion the cruise and maritime industries both in the UK and internationally. All this impact was officially recognised in 2009 when he was awarded a CBE for services to shipping.
The David Dingle Terrace
To honour David’s contribution to the maritime industry, Carnival UK has named the panoramic roof terrace at Carnival House in Southampton The David Dingle Terrace.
The location was chosen deliberately. Looking across the Port of Southampton, colleagues can see the ships, maritime operations and industry activity that have been central to David’s career and to the growth of the UK cruise sector.
Reflecting on the dedication, Paul Ludlow, president, Carnival UK, said:
“Looking out across the Port of Southampton, The David Dingle Terrace offers a unique vantage point over one of the world’s leading cruise destinations and a place that has played a central role in the growth of the European cruise industry. It felt fitting that this space should bear David’s name, recognising the contribution he has made over such a significant period.”
The terrace serves as a lasting reminder of David’s contribution to Carnival UK, P&O Cruises, Cunard and the wider maritime industry, as well as the close connection between our business, the city of Southampton and the port that has been at the heart of British cruising for generations.
As we celebrate this milestone, we thank David for his leadership, dedication and service over nearly five decades. His contribution has left a lasting mark on our people, our brands and the industry as a whole.
