New chair of the board of governors at the University of Winchester Paul Jackson has hit the road in aid of a cancer charity close to his heart.
Paul is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats with the aim of raising £2,500 for Myeloma UK.
Myeloma is a blood cancer which attacks white blood cells in bone marrow, damaging the body’s immune system. It is currently incurable but thanks in part to Myeloma UK’s efforts, treatments for the disease have improved and life expectancy for sufferers has been extended.
The charity also provides support and advice to people with the disease and their loved ones.
Myeloma is less well-known than other cancers and Paul admitted that he had never heard of it until a family member was diagnosed with the condition.
Paul said: “Like most patients and their supporters we had no idea what this incurable cancer was. Myeloma UK helped us learn and now supports patients with information and funding for ground-breaking research but what we really want is to find a cure.”
He took up cycling around a decade ago and has taken part in three London to Paris rides for Myeloma UK, once accompanied by his daughter Alice, raising more than £10,000.
This latest two-wheeled trek, the length of the UK mainland, will see Paul clock up 987 miles. As part of his training Paul has been cycling the 75 miles from his central London home to board meetings at Winchester.
Paul, who lives in Islington, took over as chair of the University board on 1 August, succeeding Mary Edwards.
A former Chief Executive of Engineering UK and Director of Professional Operations at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, he brings with him extensive experience in the media, education, local government and the charity sectors.
Speaking about his new role, Paul said: “When I first looked at the University, I was particularly impressed with the importance of the subjects available to students and their relevance to communities and careers today. Our courses in healthcare areas and those in sports science are both popular and much needed.”
Interim Vice-Chancellor, Dr Angus Paddison, said: “Paul’s ride the length of Great Britain is not only a remarkable physical feat but also in aid of a very important cause. Back in Winchester we will be cheering Paul every mile of the way.”
