One of South Hampshire College Group’s student governors has been honoured on the national stage after being shortlisted by Unloc for the prestigious Student Governor of the Year award at GovFest 2026.
Jason Collins, 19, has made a significant impact as a Student Governor at college during the 2025/26 academic year, championing the student voice across Corporation, Student Committee and Curriculum meetings. His expertise in data analysis has provided particularly valuable insight into discussions and decision-making, helping to shape improvements that support students and enhance their college experience.
This latest achievement caps an impressive summer for Jason, following his double win at the South Hampshire College Group Student Awards last month. Jason was recognised with the ‘Student Ambassador’ Award and the particularly prestigious ‘Young Student of the Year’ Award – one of the highest honours the College Group can bestow.
Jason Collins said: “It was an honour to be shortlisted for Student Governor of the Year. GovFest has greatly improved my communication and networking skills throughout the entirety of the event. I am incredibly proud to have also won two student awards during my time at college. The South Hampshire College Group Student Awards was an enjoyable and wholesome experience where family and friends got together to share some special moments with you.”
Charlotte Kilshaw, Head of Student Development & Engagement at South Hampshire College Group, said: “Jason has been a strong ambassador for Southampton College and South Hampshire College Group. He has stood out as a confident orator when speaking to peers and in representing their views in various forums. Jason has been a driving force in making a positive contribution to his college and the wider college group.”
GovFest is an annual celebration for student governors and governance professionals full of workshops, challenges and experiences. The Student Governor of the Year Awards take place at the end of the day, and this year’s programme featured a variety of guest speakers including FE Commissioners, branding gurus and lifelong changemakers.
Student Governors play a vital role in representing students on an executive level, shaping college strategy and developing leadership skills that will prepare them for their future careers.
