Our Sustainable South Action Group latest meeting reflected on progress made during 2026 and agreed its priorities for developing practical sustainability resources in 2027.
In 2026, the group completed its first KPI, which focused on helping SMEs and subcontractors understand and record their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The work has resulted in a practical resource now available through the Sustainable South page on the Business South website.
The group is now progressing KPI 2 – Natural Health Services, exploring how the Central South’s access to natural environments can be better understood and promoted as a benefit for businesses, developers and employees. Members are currently gathering case studies and examples of best practice to support this work.
Creating healthier and more sustainable places
The meeting also welcomed Preshanta Burbidge, Retrofit Manager at Winchester City Council, who shared the council’s approach to retrofit and creating healthier, more energy-efficient homes.
The discussion highlighted how retrofit can contribute to tackling climate change, fuel poverty, the cost-of-living crisis and health inequalities, while improving residents’ wellbeing. Winchester City Council is taking a coordinated approach that combines fabric improvements, renewable technologies, solar and batteries, with measures delivered at different stages.
Looking ahead to 2027
The group will continue developing practical outputs from these areas during 2027, while avoiding duplication with other Business South Action Groups working across energy, retrofit and housing.
Members will also explore opportunities around green skills and jobs, recruitment and apprenticeships, graduate retention, sustainable development and innovation, alongside relevant case studies and examples from across the Central South.
Sustainable South’s KPI’s include:
- Net zero with nature
- Natural health services
- World-class blue and green environments
- Creating great places through quality design and build
- Green skills and jobs
