The latest Maritime & Transport Action Group (MTAG) meeting saw another strong turnout, bringing together our champions from across the region to share updates and discuss key priorities.
MTAG’s chairs, Fran Collins and Gary Whittle, opened the session and updated the group on their ongoing engagement with government and wider industry champions. Focusing on ensuring the sector’s voice is clearly represented on key issues including skills, connectivity and emerging policy challenges, alongside the continued role MTAG plays in supporting regional growth.
The Maritime and Transport Careers Programme (MTCP) remained a central focus, with Katie Bruce and Kate Johnston briefing the group on recent activity and growing engagement across schools, colleges and events, emphasising that collective efforts are “stronger together with one voice.” Members were also encouraged to contribute content and support ongoing communications activity to further extend the programme’s reach.
The group also welcomed Nicky Smith, sharing with our MTAG champions about the Solent Growth Partnership’s Skills Bootcamps. With new online courses being developed in transport and logistics, the session reinforced the opportunity for employers to help shape training that aligns with sector needs, supporting ongoing priorities around skills retention across the Central South.
In addition, Claire Merritt outlined key recent and upcoming legislative changes affecting employers, highlighting the importance of staying informed as the Employment Rights Act continues to unravel.
The meeting concluded with discussion around future engagement opportunities, including the potential for a regional roundtable to further strengthen collaboration and sector visibility.
The continued success of MTAG reflects the commitment of its members to work collaboratively, ensuring the sector remains well-positioned to respond to both current challenges and future opportunities.
